By now you probably know just which item in your medicine drawer does what. You are aware that if your belly acts up, you need to take an antacid. You know that when you have an allergy flare up you must take an antihistamine. You know to take Advil or Tylenol or a similar pain killer when you are having a headache. Did you know, though, that essentially all of the stuff in your medicine box can be applied to a bunch of other ailments also? Consider these uncommon cures for ordinary household problems.

You are aware that you must take an antacid like Alka Seltzer to help calm heartburn or a stomach that is acting up. Are you aware, however, that Alka Seltzer and other antacids can also be used to soothe the stinging feelings that come with bug bites? This is because antacids like Alka Seltzer usually have aspirin in them which can lower the amount of pain and stinging that you feel when you are bitten. Create a paste with a little bit of oatmeal, water and a smashed up antacid tablet. Apply it on to the bite and you should see an immediate soothing of the bite. This remedy works much more effectively than those that are meant for the problem, like calamine lotion.

You already know that you can stop bad breath or halitosis by using mouthwash but did you know that you can use it to deal with athlete’s foot also? Alcohol based mouthwashes are really good for keeping your toes and feet clean and healthy. To use this cure for athlete’s foot, soak a cotton ball in your alcohol based mouthwash and then run the cotton ball over the soles of your feet and between your toes after every shower. The alcohol found in the mouthwash will kill any fungal infections that could be trying to take hold.

One of baking soda’s common uses is teeth cleaning. Additionally, baking soda can be used for whitening the teeth and scrubbing your mouth. Did you know that it is a good treatment for skin conditions like sunburns too? The properties found in baking soda have a neutralizing effect on the pH balance of your skin. For the most relief, pour one cup of baking soda into your bath water until it is completely dissolved and then soak in the water for about a half an hour.

You know that aloe vera is great for treating burns. It can soothe the skin and help relieve the pain of virtually every skin burn from sunburns to second-degree burns. Then again, did you know that it can cure canker sores too? The same properties found in aloe vera that help soothe skin burns help heal canker sores. Studies have found that those who treat canker sores with aloe vera heal as much as fifty percent quicker than those who use traditional cures.

These are only some of the unconventional ways you can use conventional remedies. Rather than running out to purchase the latest over-the-counter treatment for your problem, why not try something that is already on hand for you? The cures in your medicine cabinet are good for more than one thing each — make them earn their keeps!
