Medical Information on Cell Phone: For emergency use

Cell phone technology is advancing every year and in today’s culture, it is almost taboo to leave the house with out it. More features are being added to cell phones such as text messaging, email, pictures, and video. One area that cell phones have yet to incorporate is medical information. We propose that by adding a way to access specific medical information in the event of an emergency, the chances of survival will increase. To make our system the the most user friendly, we used focused on specific usability factors (Nielson,1993) along with incorporating the users mental model (Norman, 1986) With regard speed of retrieval given access options, scroll or number selection, we did not find any significant difference between the two types. We also tested the amount of instruction needed to complete each task. That is, we allowed them to have the instructions available if they did not know what to do. The amount of instruction needed would be used to determine the usability of our system.

OptiMedica Corporation specializes in helping ophthalmologists treat retinal disease, and they have integrated graphical system design and commercial off-the-shelf technologies to develop their next-generation PASCAL photocoagulator machine. PASCAL uses LabVIEW FPGA and intelligent DAQ to reduce treatment time as well as patient discomfort. This is a video featuring a live demonstration by Mike Wiltberger, cofounder and principal engineer for OptiMedica, of the OptiMedica PASCAL photocoagulator from NIWeek 2006.

A family centered birth experience at home seems to benefit the newborn and reinforces the natural mother-child bond. Medical Imaging News: Here Come Laser X-Rays

X-Rays have been in use as a medical imaging technique since approximately 1895 when Wilhelm Roentgen concluded that he was able to make photos of body structures like tissues and bones by passing electromagnetic waves through the body. He labeled the phenomenon “X” because he did not initially know the composition of the “rays”. X-Rays have been the building block upon which medical imaging technology and medical imaging equipment have been constructed.

Although the X-Ray has been a fundamental tool for medical imaging, this approach has always had the down side that the photos made are indistinct, which makes it so it requires very careful analysis and interpretation. Scientists have long searched for a way to enhance the quality of radiographic images.

Improving the Quality of Patient Care with Technology

I know a lot of folks here at Dell believe technology can make a real impact in health care by improving the quality and efficiency of patient care. It’s estimated that in one year avoidable medical errors led to 98,000 deaths—more than from AIDS, homicides, and car crashes combined. Initiatives like electronic prescriptions and health records can make a tremendous impact on reducing medical errors and streamlining how patient information is recorded, tracked and shared.

That’s one reason Dell joined the National E-Prescribing Safety Initiative last year. Lead by Allscripts, NEPSI is a coalition of organizations that can each play a role in resolving the current crisis in preventable medication errors. The goal of NEPSI is to increase patient safety by making electronic prescribing software accessible to all physicians and medication prescribers by providing it free of charge.

This is one piece of the puzzle on how best to infuse technology into health care for the benefit of patients. But there are many challenges ranging from managing the explosion of data in health care to the lack of standards across devices and applications to building interconnectivity among hospitals, physicians, payers, device makers, and pharmaceutical companies. These are all issues Dell and its Health Care and Life Sciences team is working with customers to address.

Both accurate information about the patient and information about current medical science relating to the patient’s condition must come together at the point of care. Advance information, sensor and telecommunication technologies have a significant role to play in this process. This presentation will discuss how these technologies are being applied to improve care, particularly to areas that traditionally have lacked specialty expertise. Evidence for the effectiveness of telemedicine and the future of telemedicine will also be discussed.
