In the study of Medical Technology, would you have to deal with injections and taking of blood samples?

My niece is planning on taking Medical Technology in college but is afraid of injecting medicines or taking blood samples from people. In the 4 year study of Med Tech, would you undergo taking blood samples and injecting medicines on people?

Phlebotomy (taking venous blood via a needle) is part of a career in Medical Technology. All med tech students will need to master the "art" of drawing blood. How much this skill is needed and used in the work place later depends on where you work and possibly what shift you work. It will not be the major focus of the job though. It is just something your niece will have to make herself do — most people do not enjoy drawing blood — look at it as a necessary evil of sorts on your way to a great career. Believe me, I hated learning to draw and still do not enjoy it, but I am proficient. As for injections — that’s nursing – thankfully. Best wishes for your niece.

  1. I am school to be a medical technologist right now. Injecting medications is not part of the job, but learning how to take blood samples (phlebotomy) is required to be a MT.

  3. I have one semester left in Medical Technology. I’ve worked as a Lab. Assistant for 5 years. Happy to hear about your niece being interested! Your niece will not ever have to inject medications into patients. I don’t recall it being in the MT’s job description. As far phlebotomy goes, many of us undergo the feeling of "I don’t want to draw blood because I’m afraid". Please tell her it isn’t all that bad and sometimes she may be asked to do it. I remember I was so nervous the first time I had to draw blood but after that it got soooo much easier. Tell her not to avoid medical technology just because she is afraid on phlebotomy. Phlebotomy is such a small part of the whole thing! Please send her my best and tell her she’s not the first to feel this way and definitely won’t be the last (ha ha)! Best of Luck to you and your niece!

  4. In that case, she should go for X-ray technician, or ultra-sound

  5. Mostly anything in the medical field has to do with blood sometime. Why would she be afraid of injecting meds? Yes, you would definately have to take blood samples & inject, since it will part of your job.
