Can you go into medical technology with a bachelor of arts in biology?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

I want to double major in biology and english, but they require that the both be B.S. or B.A. Is there really a difference between the two on what jobs you can get?

You can get into medical technology with a BA in biology. However, you probably won’t like the job that you get unless you either get a BS biotech microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a masters in one of those.

The difference between the jobs is that a BA/BS in general biology qualifies you to do QC/QA testing, while BS in the others qualifies you to do more in-depth experiments. I know because my wife has a BS-biology.

  3. i also have a BA in Biology, my focus is science education. At my school going the BA route is for education or social sciences, so i have less chemistry courses then a BS. I also looked at some lab positions and having a BA does make it harder cause I don’t have as extensive chemistry or lab experience as a BS does. But there are some post degree certificates in Medical Technology, but you may have to take some upper level chemistry or bio-chem classes.
