Can I go to Medical Technology school (get certified) with a BS in public health?

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

I am currently working towards a BS in industrial hygiene/public health. Do I need to get a BS in medical technology in order to join a hospital’s med. tech. program, or does the BS not matter as long as you fill certain course requirements?

As long as you have completed a BS degree and have taken the required courses, you can apply for a slot in a medical technologist internship program. Go here to see a listing of requirements to become eligible to take the ASCP registry examination: http://www.ascp.org/Certification/CertifyingExaminations/cert_procedures/eligibility/mt.aspx

I got my degree in biology/chemistry before I did a year-long internship at a hospital-based school of medical technology.

  2. There are two types of "Med Techs".

    Medical Technologists:
This requires a Bachelor degree in Medical Technology and to sit for boards. Pay range is $40-60K.

    Medical Technician:
This is a 2-year community college degree, and works under the supervision of a Medical Technologist….pay is low…lower $20’s.
